Site map, floor plans, elevations, sections, details, plumbing, electrical, mechanical Roc's Comments: David and Bunky Hopkins shared the old family house "Little Orchard " with David's brother Porter. Behind the charming old cape of many additions was a small barn. The original barn facade facing the street was simple and beautiful. David wanted us to tear it down and build a guest house with three bedrooms and baths and a full kitchen/dining living room. We did this and reproduced the lines of the original street facade. This is a very clever little house and it folds up and tucks away in the winter. Todd Stanley and Roland Sosa helped with this project.

1223Eicher/Corrow Residence
  • Document, Projection, Architectural Drawing
  • Structures, Dwellings, House
Foundation plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, sketches. Roc's Comments: Eva Eicher and Dorcas Corrow were excellent scientists and an integral part of the Jackson Lab. They owned land on Hodgdon Pond in Seal Cove and first asked me to help them renovate a little old house they lived in as a temporary residence and then asked for the design of a new home closer to the Pond. I should have know that working with a scientist as accomplished as Eva would be no small task. She questioned (with no malice) EVERYTHING. And she wanted to be a part of the process. I did probably twenty different designs and three or four models for them to review. Each one got closer to their dream home. It was a compliment to me that they were so deeply interested in every facet of my work. Eva each time had to start with the exact size and location of the kitchen sink. From there she worked her way out thru the building. They became very close and dear friends and I treasure the time we spent working this dream home out. They love the location of the sink.

1200A.I.A. for H.U.D./DOE, Low Energy House
  • Document, Projection, Architectural Drawing
  • Structures, Dwellings, House
sections, floor plans, elevations, site plans Roc's comments: Back in the late 70's we experience one of the cyclical oil fuel crises and the Carter Administration decided to shake some ideas out of the crazies in the back woods as we were at the end of the pipeline and it was in our best interest to come up with inventive alternatives to expensive fuels. The Feds thru the AIA research organization, DOE and HUD invited us to design a single family house using alternative heat supply and delivery systems. Harris Hyman and I were given the Northeast and specifically Binghamton, NY as our site. Binghampton is the city with the lowest number of sunlight hours in the Northeast. Harris and I decided, after a few cocktails, that we would design a building that required no outside source of energy beyond the sun and a small wood stove backup for eccentric moments. We were flown to St. Louis and spent a few days presenting and defending our concepts with teams from other regional areas of the US. Our design, and particularly the engineering approach was quite a hit and the jury after much debate accepted the design with commendation but nothing was ever done with the work after the conference ended.

basement/foundation plan, details and specifications, floor plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules Roc's Comments: Sam and Mary Alice Fox were two retired doctors. They had quite an amazing history and decided to retire to his family's vacation site on the Southern end of Long Pond. Wonderful site and truly inspiring people. We went thru an orderly and thorough design and construction process and I enjoyed every moment of it and was honored to be their friend here on MDI after that. We always had some little project to solve together, but I think it was just an excuse to hang out. Their family were all very tall, thus the lofty feeling inside. Mary Alice had severe arthritis and we installed a good sized hot tub off of their master bathroom. No moisture problems due to serious research on our part. If this house pleases the viewer, they are getting just a small sense of how wonderful these two were.

Floor plans Roc's Comments: The nicest couple. Introduce to them by Scott Werner, their contractor. A Blue Hill Architect did the original little one room sauna when their family was younger. When the children became adults with children the Heimbolds asked us to incorporate the original sauna space and design into a much larger building with kitchen/dining/ living two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
