Invitation to tour of the new building. Has images of the building, floor plans, and an elevation. Roc's Comments: This one was hard. The directors of the Harbor House changed and the board changed when we were in the process of doing this project. There was an understandable fracture on the board between saving the old schoolhouse on Main Street and moving to this new facility. The plans were for a state of the art daycare center, a multi use gymnasium/ meeting room and an exercise/ health facility. The Committee chose to build two of the three functions and included a mechanical system for the eventual third (exercise) wing. Carl Haskell was the project manager on this one. Either Todd Hardy or Jeff Wright did the computer drawing.

Structures, Civic, Cultural & Recreational Structures
colored schematic Roc's comment: Christopher Hutchins asked us to design a concert pavilion for the waterfront in Bangor. We did a substantial amount of work and came up with the design and development drawings for a unique cable and canvas structure meant to look like a cluster of maple trees on the shore of the Penobscot. When we brought it to the New York engineering firm for construction development their aggressive and condescending approach made me suggest we drop the project. Chris agreed and the disappointment of the experience lead to our abandoning the project. I have a great model made of wood and mylar at home. Wish this one had gone another way.

elevations Roc's comment: This was a house warming gift to David and Diana to store tools and maintenance equipment. It was later commandeered by their daughters Arianna and Camilla and I am delighted that they liked it.

Structures, Other Structures, Architectural Features
March 15, 1994 2 schemes for shelving Roc's comment: Charlie and Lynda Tyson bought an old shingle style pile on the harbor in Bar Harbor. These are alternate sketches for a small interior renovation. We later went on to design them a new home in Salisbury Cove.

Elevations, floor plans, details Roc's Comments: Joanie Matheson needed a get away place. A garden house or teahouse. A place that was hers alone and she could escape to it and read or write or just sit and think. It is interesting how many of these little "getaway" places there are here on MDI. A phenomenon of the intense summer season and its sometimes draining impact on the matriarch and hostess. This project was a real pleasure to do. Joanie is a special person and I could sit and draw it by hand and do it all without staff and complications and I love the result and think Joanie does as well.

Sketches, elevations, schemes Roc's comments: Old Mr. Coston was dying. He asked me to design a motel for a vacant lot on Main Street in Bar Harbor. This great solution describes a "shingled Rusticator's Carriage House" row of shops and offices facing Main Street with a "No tell motel" along the north side of the parking lot beyond. We presented it to him on Christmas. He was delighted. He died soon after the Holidays. Nice man.

Sketch, floor plans Roc's Comments: Tom Walsh was a self made man who grew up in Bangor and eventually became an extremely successful Hotel developer with projects all over the country. He was disliked by the local Bar Harbor establishment because he bought the defunct Bar Harbor club, renovated it and built a new motel (not the most attractive thing but better than its predecessor). He hired me to help him gain planning board permission, design additions that were not built on the Thorndike Residence (a good thing) and prepare an accessibility report for the state describing every ADA function available in his new motel. I do not understand why local citizens dislike his efforts. He was a nice man and asked only for work done to the highest standards and I liked him.
