Sketch, floor plans Roc's Comments: Tom Walsh was a self made man who grew up in Bangor and eventually became an extremely successful Hotel developer with projects all over the country. He was disliked by the local Bar Harbor establishment because he bought the defunct Bar Harbor club, renovated it and built a new motel (not the most attractive thing but better than its predecessor). He hired me to help him gain planning board permission, design additions that were not built on the Thorndike Residence (a good thing) and prepare an accessibility report for the state describing every ADA function available in his new motel. I do not understand why local citizens dislike his efforts. He was a nice man and asked only for work done to the highest standards and I liked him.

Invitation to tour of the new building. Has images of the building, floor plans, and an elevation. Roc's Comments: This one was hard. The directors of the Harbor House changed and the board changed when we were in the process of doing this project. There was an understandable fracture on the board between saving the old schoolhouse on Main Street and moving to this new facility. The plans were for a state of the art daycare center, a multi use gymnasium/ meeting room and an exercise/ health facility. The Committee chose to build two of the three functions and included a mechanical system for the eventual third (exercise) wing. Carl Haskell was the project manager on this one. Either Todd Hardy or Jeff Wright did the computer drawing.

south elevation, interior Roc's Comments: Neva and Walter Kaiser asked me to design a kitchen renovation for their home "Stonecrop" on Bracy Cove. Neva is a brilliant woman but does not see three dimensional spaces in her mind. We would mock up the various elements of this project in cardboard and duct tape and scrap lumber and she came to life and, I think we made a charming and efficient kitchen space for them. Bob Patterson, a trustee at College of the Atlantic, introduced us and he designed the beautiful garden in front of the new bay window.

Foundation plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, sketches. Roc's Comments: Eva Eicher and Dorcas Corrow were excellent scientists and an integral part of the Jackson Lab. They owned land on Hodgdon Pond in Seal Cove and first asked me to help them renovate a little old house they lived in as a temporary residence and then asked for the design of a new home closer to the Pond. I should have know that working with a scientist as accomplished as Eva would be no small task. She questioned (with no malice) EVERYTHING. And she wanted to be a part of the process. I did probably twenty different designs and three or four models for them to review. Each one got closer to their dream home. It was a compliment to me that they were so deeply interested in every facet of my work. Eva each time had to start with the exact size and location of the kitchen sink. From there she worked her way out thru the building. They became very close and dear friends and I treasure the time we spent working this dream home out. They love the location of the sink.
