| site plan, elevations, foundation plans, engineering plans, sketches Roc's Comments: Peggy Rockefeller asked me to come up and look at the greenhouse that supported the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Gardens at that time. the plants were growing too tall and "leggy" I suggested this was because she had been sold a system that was Kalwall plastic that became more opaque with age. She asked me to prove it and I hired Peter Knuppel a good local lighting designer to test the light. the data was dramatic and Peggy and David Rockefeller asked me to design a replacement greenhouse not only for the AARG but also to add wings for Thuja and the Asticou gardens which they seemed to think would require support in the future. We chose the Rough Brothers, a Cincinnati company that supplied excellent greenhouses for college and public gardens around the country. The project went off without a hitch and the greenhouses have been in constant use ever since. The seedlings are no longer leggy. The McAlpine Farm complex is now the center for the Land And Garden Preserve a non-profit organization responsible for the AARG, Asticou, and Thuja Gardens and 1,000 acres of parkland and trails including Little Long Pond. |

The work was done by Steve Demers a former COA design student who later worked in our office on the Gilley Museum project. So the Russell house has become a two generation project. Each half was sold as a separate building. The Scotts, a wonderful older couple from Philadelphia (?) asked us to renovate their half into a more livable summer home. Jeffry Wright and I took on the task with enthusiasm. The carpentry contractors Bond Builders had previously added a colonial addition to the Frenchman Bay side of the half structure that was perfectly functional and paid for. We did not want to intrude on some of the fabulous Queen Ann/ shingle style remaining structure so we created a very complicated addition that appeared consistent with the Queen Ann appearance of the Western or entrance side of the building and consistent with the "colonial" appearance of the Frenchman's Bay Eastern facade. I think it worked and the Scotts were delighted. |

The work began back in the 70's and was first a kitchen renovation with bay window addition. Bob Patterson who suggested me to Neva was cajoled into designing the beautiful garden in front. Neva and I worked well together and she truly enjoyed the new space when it was completed. Edgar Walls did the construction and Barb Sassaman helped with the drawings. We went on to do about 5 or six additional tasks for Neva there including moving and renovating the Jordan house across the road. |

He was disliked by the local Bar Harbor establishment because he bought the defunct Bar Harbor club, renovated it and built a new motel (not the most attractive thing but better than its predecessor). He hired me to help him gain planning board permission, design additions that were not built on the Thorndike Residence (a good thing) and prepare an accessibility report for the state describing every ADA function available in his new motel. I do not understand why local citizens dislike his efforts. He was a nice man and asked only for work done to the highest standards and I liked him. |

I was then asked to design a room to display his shop and a workspace for carvers and a small auditorium. We had not realized how popular the place would become and needed space for expansion. I did this work from my home studio in Philadelphia and John DeFazio a fellow employee at Venturi, Scott Brown helped with the drawings. |
